Strelitzia nicolai is a relative of the well-known Strelitzia reginae† It is up to 10 meters high, evergreen multi-stemmed plant with a palm-like foliage crown. The grey-green, banana-like leaves are 1,5 to 2,5 meters long, alternately placed, elongated and lanceolate. They are arranged in a fan-shaped pattern and arise from the straight trunks. This makes the plant resemble the traveler tree from the same plant family and on a palm† The lower part of the trunk becomes bare as the leaves fall there.
The name Strelitzia Originates from Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz and the name nicole is a tribute to Nicholas II of Russia.
