4 ways to grow your own strawberries
Everyone knows the plastic tray with strawberries which they buy in almost every supermarket. But, what if I said that growing your own strawberries your whole world upside down and that you wouldn't want to go back to the supermarket for strawberries after this?
Keep in mind that the choice of method is entirely up to you, but to have a meaningful harvest you should grow 6 strawberry plants per person. This may sound like a lot, but don't stress as you can grow a lot of strawberry plants in the design of the ways.
Now on to the four different ways with corresponding tips!
1st way: growing strawberries in hanging baskets
Maybe not a very well known way, but you can strawberries grow in floating baskets. Precisely! Those baskets that also provide a nice atmosphere. Any hanging basket is suitable for this way, even the one that is still somewhere in the back of the shed.
Tip! The only thing to keep in mind is that, with the limit of 6 plants per person, you'll need to keep in mind that you'll need several baskets to get a big harvest.
There are several reasons why growing in hanging baskets is very useful. For example, a hanging basket helps a lot in preventing overwatering and spreading the water evenly.
2nd way: growing strawberries in pots
Probably the most well-known way of growing fresh strawberries† No surprise, since you can enjoy the flowers that come out as well as the strawberries, or two birds with one stone!
Tip! Pots that are specially made for growing strawberries are definitely recommended to use. Normal pots can also be used for growing, but keep in mind how many holes there are in a pot, as more holes will give you a bigger harvest.
Tip! Take a piece of PVC pipe and drill some holes in it. Then place it in the middle of the pot. This ensures that when watering the water comes all the way to the bottom of the pot.
3rd way: growing strawberries in a planter
A planter is also a good option for growing strawberries† You may have already seen this somewhere. Different designs are used for growing strawberries in a planter. For example, you have one planter that is being used, but planters are also stacked on top of each other to grow more strawberries in a somewhat smaller space. You can buy the latter or build it yourself in the garden on Sunday.
4th way: growing strawberries in the ground
Ordered before the strawberry lovers who have the space for this, this is perfect. The strawberries have enough space in the ground to let the roots run their course.
Tips for growing strawberries
Growing strawberries is not that difficult. Not at all, if you plant them well and give them love, you can enjoy your own freshly grown strawberries for a number of years. That sounds like good summers!!!
Here are a few more helpful tips:
take your time
Strawberries can withstand lower temperatures and mild frost. This means that these plants are best planted early, such as early spring/autumn.
If you buy carrots for somewhere strawberries, hydrate the roots well (about 20 minutes) before planting them in a good soil (rich in minerals).
In the fall you can then move the grown roots to the place where you like the strawberries want to see it grow.
Give the roots space
Roots are a very important part for the strawberry plant. The roots ensure that the strawberry plant can reproduce. These roots also allow strawberries to spread more liberally and continue to grow.
Try to avoid overcrowding between plants. This can be done by growing strawberries between older plants, because once they stop growing, the younger plants can get in and have plenty of room to grow.
Even if you use strawberry seeds, you should pay attention to the space between the planted seeds.
sun sun sun
Strawberries love the sun (who doesn't?). So whichever way you choose to make your own strawberries to grow, make sure the plant gets enough sunlight. You can think of about eight hours of sun a day for the juiciest strawberries.
Water and fertilize
It is of course not surprising that the strawberries get thirsty after relaxing in the sun for eight hours. For this reason, think carefully about watering the plant and especially the roots! It is best to avoid letting the leaves get the water.
In terms of compost, we can recommend fertilizing the soil around early spring and again in the fall.
Friends
Just like humans, plants also like to be surrounded by friends, so maybe think about growing other plants too. I recommend garlic, beans, lettuce and spinach!
Time to harvest, now what?
After growing the strawberries, taking care of them and all the love, the strawberries are there, but what now? Make sure to pick the strawberries early in the morning when they are still a little cool to the touch. After that, go straight into the fridge.
After this you are done. The next day you have nice cool strawberries for breakfast, drinks or just as a snack. Enjoy!
