Caladium is the botanical name of a genus of tropical plants from Central and South America, especially from Brazil and the Amazon region, where they grow in the jungles. The name is derived from the Malay keladi, which means plant with edible roots.
Caladium bicolor, Vent. (two-tone) Herbaceous, tropical ornamental plant grown in greenhouses for room culture because of its beautiful leaves, which are arrow or shield-shaped. The leaf is finely veined white, green, pink, red and brilliant in colour. The beautiful pink-red leaves in particular shine in the greenhouses.
White flowers in June.
Indian cabbage comes from Brazil and was described in 1773.
The plants die in winter and are left over by the tuberous thickened roots. Let it overwinter dry at 15 degrees. Pot up in early March. Give them plenty of light, but no direct sun. But again heat, manure and moist air.
Propagate by dividing the rhizomes before potting them up.
