Vriesea Splendens

6.95

Mostly from Brazil. These plants have sturdy flower stems with brightly colored bracts, often in the shape of a spearhead.

The plant owes its name to HW de Vriese (1806-1862) a professor of botany in Amsterdam and Leiden and co-founder of the Dutch Botanical Association in 1845.

  • The root ball must be kept moist during the growing season (April to October). In winter, watering should be halved. De Vriesea likes to be in a well-drained pot. There should be a little water in the tube, but in winter the tube is emptied, except in warm rooms. You should pour with lukewarm and lime-free water.
  • Since the Vriesea is very sensitive to dry air, a humidity of more than 60% must always be maintained.
  • The Vriesea is not hardy. The plant should be kept warm at a temperature that does not fall below 18-20 degrees Celsius at night.
  • Flowering plants can also be kept in more shaded conditions.
  • Special Bromeliad potting soil is commercially available. A mixture of coniferous forest soil, leaf soil and peat dust can also be used.
