Sarracenia is a genus of carnivorous pitcher plants from North America. Carnivorous plants, or Carnivores, they really exist. With their colorful, whimsical appearance, they catch insects and spiders, and then digest them. Not exactly everyday, that's why they're extra nice to have!
The best known Carnivorous plants are Dionaea muscipula, Sarracenia, Drosera and Nepenthes. Exotic names for whimsical plants that attract, trap and digest insects with their scent and color. They all do that in their own way. Dionaea or the Venus flytrap uses trap leaves, which snap shut at lightning speed. In the Drosera, the prey sticks to the leaves with tentacles. Also ingenious: the leaves of Sarracenia have a cup shape in which insects are caught. Nepenthes also uses cups, which hang from the leaf tips.
